DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Durham police surrounded a shopping center after a deadly shooting Tuesday afternoon.

The incident was reported around 5 p.m. in the 3600 block of Hillsborough Road, according to a news release from Durham police.

When police arrived, they found a male who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police were seen going into and out of the VIP Tobacco and Vape Shop, which was behind crime scene tape.

Ken Strawbridge, the owner of Strawbridge Studios, says he rushed over to the area after getting a call.

“Of course, I asked if it was an employee and no one knew, so I was in a panic mode. I don’t want anybody to pass away and when it gets close to home… but it was not,” Strawbridge said.

Customers at a nearby salon say they panicked, too recalling the sound of between seven and 10 gunshots and the victim who ran inside a vape shop next door.

The group saw paramedics give CPR to the man before he was taken in an ambulance.

Tuesday night, police said the shooting happened in the parking lot and the man “made his way inside” the VIP Tobacco and Vape shop after he was injured.

The shopping center is near the split of the Durham Freeway/N.C. 147 and Interstate 85 in northeast Durham.

Several other businesses are in the shopping center, including a Cook Out and Cracker Barrel.
