DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) - Durham police are investigating after a man was found dead inside a burned out car Thursday night.
According to police, the man was found dead inside the vehicle just before 9:45 p.m. in the 5000 block of Guardian Drive, just off South Miami Boulevard.
"I kind of smelled something burning. I looked down the road and I saw a bunch of cop cars and fire trucks. I thought I saw a couple of flames," said Jacob Henderson who lives in 200 East Apartment complex directly next to the crime scene.
Durham police have not said if they suspect foul play, nor did they release the identity of the deceased man or how he died.
Dan Derienzo lives in the apartment next to where the body was discovered and says the heavily wooded dead end is not a place people frequent.
"I think whoever did this actually knew where they were going because it's a really shady area down there," he said.
Neighbor Carmen Harris agreed that people don't accidentally go back down the wooded road. She says the grim scene was too close for comfort.
"It's just unnerving because the trash is right here, we park right (there)," said Harris. "It's a shame. I hope it wasn't a neighbor."
