Duke student says she was raped at knifepoint in campus apartment building

Durham County News

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Duke student reported Thursday morning that she was raped while sleeping in a campus apartment building, according to crime alert from Duke University.

The student reported that the sexual assault occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. when she was sleeping in a Central Campus Apartment Building commons room. The building is located on Pace Street, according to the alert.

The woman said she was sleeping when she was woken up by a man with short brown hair who smelled like perfume. The woman said the man threatened her with a knife, put on a condom and then raped her.

Duke officials told CBS 17 that the suspect is 25 but did not provide any other details.

The news has left some students feeling unsafe.

“It was so scary,” said Swathi Bala. “My roommate was like, ‘Did you see your phone,’ and I was like yes, this is very, very creepy that someone showed up to someone’s apartment.”

It bothers Bala that no arrest has been made.

“It’s kind of scary that we have to think about that all the time when we’re walking around at night and stuff,” she said.

“It just reminds you that is not as safe as you think it is,” said Tahia Emran, another Duke student.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Duke Police at 919-684-2444 or report anonymously with the Duke LiveSafe app or on the Duke Police website.
