Durham police announce ‘No Perched Packages’ campaign

Durham County News

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – The Durham Police Department announced a program aimed at curtailing break-ins in which thieves target gifts.

The “No Perched Packages” campaign encourages people to take boxes for gifts — namely ones that contained pricey electronics like televisions and gaming consoles — break them down and take them to one of Durham’s recycling centers.

A release from Durham police said leaving these boxes outside of a home could publicize items inside the house to thieves.

“Instead of putting boxes curbside this holiday season, use a designated recycling site to throw boxes away,” the release read.

The campaign runs from Dec. 20 through Jan. 8. The recreation centers are located at:

  • Long Meadow Park: 917 Liberty St.
  • Walltown Park Recreation Center: 1308 W. Club Blvd.
  • Morreene Road Recreation Center: 1102 Morreene Rd.
  • Campus Hills Recreation Center: 2000 S. Alston Ave.
