DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Durham police have arrested 34-year-old Roland Richardson  of Durham regarding a homicide that happened Thursday afternoon on Fayetteville Street near its intersection with the Durham Freeway.

Officials say Richardson turned himself in to police Thursday night.

Family identified the victim as Gregory Shaw Jr. They said he was 22 years old.

“He was just loving. Like, I mean he loved my daughter. He was like another, like daddy to my daughter,” said Kamya Bullock, Shaw’s sister.

Family members said Shaw rode his dirt bike to Fayetteville Street to get some lunch at the BBQ stand. Within a matter of minutes, they told CBS 17 there was a confrontation. Shaw was shot and killed.

Police could not confirm that account.

“He loved sports. He loved his family and he was a down to earth person. He wasn’t in no gangs, he wasn’t none of that. He loved to ride dirt bikes and four-wheelers. Just enjoy life,” said Shaw’s father, Gregory Shaw Sr.

“Everybody know he was a good guy,” Bullock said.

Officers responded to a shooting call shortly after 2 p.m. along the 900 block of Fayetteville Street near Old Fayetteville Street, a news release said. They arrived to find an adult male lying in a parking lot.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

Family members said Shaw would have been 23 in May.

Neighbors, who didn’t know him, were also shaken.

“It could have been me or one of my relatives. So it just saddens our heart that things like this are happening in our very own community,” Curtis Peaks, a neighbor said.

This marks the second homicide in Durham in two days. A 21-year-old man was found Wednesday night suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the hospital, police said.

Richardson has been charged with murder and placed in custody of the Durham County Jail without bond.
