A vehicle and debris fire made it appear as though a high-rise building was on fire in downtown Durham Thursday morning.
According to Durham Fire Department Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi, crews were dispatched to a vehicle fire at a scrap metal yard located at 217 S. Holman St. around 10:45 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters realized that the fire involved several vehicles and a pile of debris, including motors, plastic and cardboard.
A large plume of smoke was created and, from some vantage points, made it appear as though a building in downtown Durham was on fire, Iannuzzi said.
No structures were involved in the fire and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
