Homicide investigation underway in Durham after teen shot to death in car, police say

Durham County News

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Durham police are investigating a homicide after a person was shot to death in a car on Monday morning, according to officials.

Officers and detectives are on Kirby Street following a shooting that left one person dead, police said. Police later identified the person who died as Joshua Garner, 18, of Durham.

Neighbors told CBS 17 they heard about five gunshots around 7 a.m. and came outside to see police swarming the street.

There are at least five evidence markers on the ground around a silver car parked on Kirby Street.

People who live in the neighborhood said they’ve never heard gunshots out there before.

“It kind of frightened me. This kind of thing doesn’t happen in my neighborhood, so I was really concerned,” said neighbor Anita Brake. “I was really concerned about what was going on and I still am.”

This is the fifth person shot in Durham in the last week and data from Durham police shows the number of people shot this year is already outpacing last year’s numbers. A total of 55 people have been shot so far in 2021 and seven of those people have died.

The investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released at this time.
