DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) - Durham police need your help looking for a man who robbed an elderly couple in wheelchairs.
Police say the couple was coming from the bus stop around 1:45 p.m. Friday when the robbery happened at The Lofts at Southside.
“We are kind of targets we are new people to a new neighborhood is a nice looking neighborhood so it looks like we have a bunch of money," said De’Shaunta Sharper.
She has been living in the neighborhood for three years.
She couldn’t believe someone would take advantage of people living with disabilities.
Police say the 65-year-old man and 78-year-old woman were both in wheelchairs.
“It’s infuriating because that's a very cowardly move because they can't defend themselves," she said. "They are defenseless.”
The suspect tried to take rings off the woman’s fingers, causing bruises. He got away with a necklace he yanked off her neck.
Sharper says she’s going to be more alert now, knowing he’s still on the loose.
“I also have a mother who I'm bringing back with me who is also disabled," she said. "She walks around the neighborhood often with a walker and that would be a mistake if you touch mom.”
The leasing office tells CBS 17 they sent notes to people living there about what happened.
The development is fairly new, with a few people telling CBS 17 they moved into the neighborhood over the weekend.
