A Durham mother said a real-life Grinch stole her children’s Christmas presents right out of her pickup truck this past weekend.
“It’s sad because we put up a tree and everything, and now there’s no presents for them to open on Christmas Day,” said the mother, who did not want to be identified.
The mother has two young kids and her sister has three. She said money is tight this year, so they went to Orange County Social Service’s Toys for Tots event.
“We stood out there for hours and hours for the toys for the kids,” the mother said.
She said that her kids got the toys after hours of waiting on Saturday morning.
“Then after that, my mom said, ‘Why don’t we just go get wrapping paper so the kids won’t see the presents until Christmas?’ So, we went in the store, to the thrift shop, to go buy wrapping paper,” the mom said.
The mother said they had the toys in a black bag in the back of their pickup truck and parked it the OCIM Thrift Shop parking lot while they went inside. She said when they came out 30 minutes later the toys were gone.
“They’re still small, so they’ll expect toys under the tree, but now they won’t have any to open,” she said.
The mom said the manager of the thrift shop called the Hillsborough Police Department, which is still investigating the theft.
“I just hope that whoever took them really needed them, and I guess they can just enjoy them. And I guess if they took them, maybe they really do need them, so I just hope that’s why they took them, and not just to be cruel and ruin somebody’s Christmas,” the mother said.
CBS 17 reached out to Orange County Social Services, but has not heard back. The mother said it told her it would try to come up with some more toys.
