A woman was struck by an Amtrak train and killed Thursday morning, according to Durham police.
Dispatchers received a call regarding the train vs. pedestrian collision just before 7:15 a.m.
The woman, identified as Judy Estrada, 50, was hit on Swift Avenue near W. Main Street, police said.
Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Estrada was walking across the train tracks towards W. Main Street when she was struck by a westbound Amtrak train.
Passengers remained on the train as of 10 a.m. but the scene had been cleared by 10:30 a.m.
No one on the train was injured.
According to police, “The train arms had come down and all safety mechanisms were working when the collision occurred, according to investigators. The train operator had hit the brakes and blown the horn, but was unable to stop in time.”
