YANCEYVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — The 22-year-old woman killed in a lion attack in Caswell County was laid to rest Sunday.
Alexandra Black was an intern at the Conservators Center in Caswell County.
On Dec. 30 workers were cleaning a lion enclosure when a lion got out of a locked area and attacked Black, who died at the scene.
The lion was killed with gunfire after tranquilizer darts failed.
Black’s family says their daughter wanted to make a career working with animals. Black’s funeral was held near New Palestine, Indiana, which is where Black grew up.
They’re asking for donations to “Wolf Park” in Indiana, where a wolf enclosure will be dedicated in her honor.
In a Facebook post Sunday evening, the Conservators Center said in part:
“Alex had a passion for animals that was evident to anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Losing Alex so early in her career is a loss for the entire zoological and conservation community.”
The Conservators Center also wrote that they have hired an attorney, reviews of the attack are ongoing and that they will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation.
