SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — An 80-year-old Sanford woman was found dead in her home on Sunday evening, Lee County deputies say.
The death is being investigated as a homicide, Lee County Sheriff Tracy Carter said in a news release.
Norma Smith Brown was found dead by a family member around 7:45 p.m. in her home in the 100 block of Polly Lane in Sanford, Carter said.
The news of Brown’s death left family and friends devastated.
“I’m just in shock — it’s like it’s not real,” said Bob Place, who attended church with Brown for decades.
A family member said Brown’s car was stolen and later found about three miles away.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office would not confirm that, but Wes Hartley, who lives in that area, said he saw numerous law enforcement vehicles Monday morning.
“I knew something was going on — they were either looking for somebody or something like that,” he said.
While investigators work to figure out who killed Brown, friends are remembering the kind person she was.
“She’s just real bubbly, loves everyone. She’s just a good lady,” recalled Place.
The news release did not say how Brown was killed. No other information was released.
Anyone with information regarding the case is urged to call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 919-775-5531 or the tip line 919-718-4477.
