SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) – 911 calls released Monday show how hospital workers scrambled to save the life of a coworker who police said had been stabbed by a patient.

The worker, identified as Eric Hammond, 52, was attacked by a suspect who was being treated in the hospital.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. at the emergency department of Johnston Medical Center, Smithfield police said.

A suspect was waiting for medical treatment when he assaulted Hammond with a knife, police said.

“We just had an assault on a nurse here and he is gushing blood,” a 911 caller says.

The suspect fled the hospital on foot and was captured about two blocks from the hospital by Smithfield police and Johnston County deputies, officials said.

“The suspect, the mental health patient, is on foot outside the emergency department. He took off, and apparently, he’s armed because he gutted one of my nurses like a daggum,” the caller says

Connor Phillip Sullivan, 25, was later charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, police said.

“I don’t even know how my nurse got injured but he came running down the hall with an arterial bleed. I mean, I don’t even know what they got him with,” the caller said.

Smithfield police said late Saturday night that Hammond was in stable condition.

Johnston Health later provided a statement to the media:

There was an incident in our Smithfield Emergency department this evening and one of our coworkers was injured. The safety of employees and patients is our top priority.

Smithfield Police are investigating, and we’re cooperating fully. Our thoughts and prayers are with our employee and our employee’s family.

Sullivan is being held on a $60,000 secured bond in the Johnston County Jail.
