SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) – Johnston County Schools have joined the list of school districts across the state that will be closed May 1, the day of a teacher march and rally in downtown Raleigh, according to a release.
May 1 will now be a day off for students and an optional teacher workday for teachers and staff, the district announced.
“Without the presence of essential staff members, normal operations will be disrupted and create possible issues regarding the order of our school day,” said Dr. Ross Renfrow, superintendent.
As of Thursday, 505 Johnston County Schools staff members have requested off May 1.
Other local school districts closed on May 1 include Wake County, Cumberland County Schools, Durham Public Schools, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, Orange County Schools, Nash-Rocky Mount Schools, and Wilson County Schools.
