Man charged after leading troopers on chase through Johnston Co. with daughter in car

A man was arrested Wednesday night after leading North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers on a chase with his 7-year-old daughter in the vehicle, according to a news release.

A trooper attempted to stop 32-year-old Anand Rushikesh Mehta’s BMW on Interstate 40 in Johnston County at about 9:36 p.m. Wednesday. The release said he was driving at 108 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Mehta failed to stop for the trooper. A pursuit ensued. It made its way onto I-95. Mehta attempted to exit onto Keen Road, but lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and down an embankment, the release said.

Mehta’s 7-year-old daughter was located in the backseat and was unharmed. She was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital to be evaluated, the release said.

Mehta is charged with felony flee to elude an officer, driving while impaired, violation of a driver license restriction, speeding at 108 mpt in a 70 mph zone, reckless driving, fail to stop at a stop sign, child abuse, operating a vehicle with no insurance, and failing to register his vehicle with NCDMV. 

Mehta is being held in the Johnston County Jail under a $1.5 million bond.
