SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) – A Johnston County hospital worker suffered life-threatening injuries during a knife attack by a suspect who was being treated in the hospital Saturday evening, officials say.
The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. at the emergency department of Johnston Medical Center, according to a news release from Smithfield police.
A suspect was waiting for medical treatment when he assaulted a member of the hospital staff with a knife, police said.
“The hospital staff member has suffered a life-threatening injury,” police said in a news release.
The suspect fled the hospital on foot and was captured about two blocks from the hospital by Smithfield police and Johnston County deputies, officials said.
Johnston Health later provided a statement to the media:
There was an incident in our Smithfield Emergency department this evening and one of our coworkers was injured. The safety of employees and patients is our top priority.
Smithfield Police are investigating, and we’re cooperating fully. Our thoughts and prayers are with our employee and our employee’s family.
No other information about the incident was released by police.
