ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCN) — An Edgecombe County man has pleaded guilty in the death and kidnapping of a woman who was found dead in Nash County in 2017.

Shantonio Lucas, 26, was taken into custody soon after the body of Glorika Townsend was found on Sept. 4, 2017.

Lucas was charged with first-degree murder.

Authorities found Townsend’s body just three days after she was reported missing near U.S. Highway 64 in Nash County after searching the Tar River and woods in Rocky Mount.

“Someone took her life and threw her on the side of the road like a piece of trash,” Townsend’s mother told CBS 17 at the time.

Authorities began searching the Tar River Monday before finding her body in woods off Highway 64.

Townsend’s car was found in the parking lot of Chico’s Mexican Restaurant near a boat launch on the river, authorities said.

Lucas appeared in Nash Superior Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.

Lucas was sentenced to between 37 to 47 years in prison.
