On March 31, deputies located a dead woman in the woods in the Ingold community. She was later identified as Carter.

Authorities won’t say exactly where she was found because the location needs to remain private “for investigative purposes.”

“It’s unfortunate that a loss of life took place, having gone from missing to discovery of a deceased person,” said Sheriff Jimmy Thornton. “My heart goes out to the family.”

The sheriff’s office did not say whether they suspect foul play in Carter’s death or not.

Anyone having any information regarding the death investigation is asked to contact investigators at the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 592-4141.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available for release at this time, the sheriff’s office said.
