CARTHAGE, N.C. (WNCN) — A man who was being interrogated in connection with a narcotics investigation attempted to hang himself in the interrogation room on Tuesday, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said.

The unnamed suspect was in the interrogation room at the Rick Rhyne Public Safety Center in Carthage on Tuesday afternoon after he had been arrested for multiple drug-related charges, officials said. While warrants were being prepared, the man attempted to hang himself inside the room, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Immediate medical aid was rendered and the arrestee was subsequently transported to First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst where he is listed in critical but stable condition,” authorities said in a news release.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the incident.

Officials said that due to the SBI investigation there are no further details that can be released at this time.
