DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — More than a thousand mourners filed into the New Horizon Church Wednesday afternoon for the funeral for Chase Underhill, who died in an accident Dec. 29.

The family asked visitors to wear camouflage to the funeral. As a result, nearby Walmart’s and Dick’s Sporting Good stores were almost sold out of any camouflage clothing.

Underhill was a junior at Orange High School in Hillsborough, and Wednesday was the first day of class after the winter break. Friends who knew him say many left the school early, to attend the funeral.

Austin Goehring was on the same swim team as Underhill. He said, “He was a great friend. Really easy to get along with.”

Colin Ware, another  friend and classmate, said, “It’s just really heart-breaking. Everyone loved him. He’s had a really big heart.”

Jennifer Cardona, a freshman at Orange High, also knew Underhill.

“I knew Chase as that happy go-lucky guy,” she said. “He was just somebody that always made everybody happy and he just loved to make people smile. Knowing that we’ll never be able to see him again it just broke my heart.”

The visitation for Kacie Chamberlain is Thursday at New Horizon from 4 to 7 p.m., with the funeral Friday at 3 p.m. at New Horizon.

Chamberlain died in the accident with Underhill.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Underhill crashed in what was called a prearranged racing incident. Collin Lunsford and 16-year-old Underhill were racing their pick-up trucks down Little River Church Road when Underhill lost control and slammed into a tree.

Two other teens, Sam Whaley and McCray Williams, survived the wreck. Both are recovering from their injuries.

No one in the truck driven by Underhill was wearing a seat belt.
