HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The search for 91-year-old Nathaniel Brookins has ended as authorities say he was found dead.
A male matching his description was found in a field off Lawrence Road in Orange County.
His cause of death has not yet been determined.
Brookins was reported missing after wandering away on Friday from an AirBnB he was staying in with his daughter and grandson.
Brookins, originally from Jackson, Mississippi was in North Carolina visiting another family member.
Brookins, who is in the early stages of dementia, is on foot and may have become confused and left the AirBnB, attempting to return to Mississippi, according to his family. Authorities say Brookins does not use a cane regularly and may sometimes pick up a stick to help himself walk.
Deputies in Orange County say they conducted an investigation throughout the weekend, which has included using K9 units, ATV searching, and going door-to-door, asking for any information on Brookins’ whereabouts.
Authorities ask anyone with information to dial 911 or call the Orange County Sheriff’s Office at 919-245-2918.
