CARRBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A Carrboro man who was charged earlier this month with statutory rape is now facing multiple new charges, according to police.

Police announced on March 1 that Carlos Alberto Morales Lopez, 30, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Taskforce in Carrboro and charged with one count of statutory rape.

On Thursday, police announced more charges against Morales Lopez. He is now facing charges of first-degree statutory rape of a child, first-degree statutory sex offense, and first-degree burglary.

Police said in their March 1 release that they had reason to believe Morales Lopez could be connected to more crimes that hadn’t yet been reported to law enforcement.

Morales Lopez was already being held in the Orange County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond. An additional $300,000 secured bond has been added to that due to the new charges.

Police are continuing to investigate Morales Lopez and ask that if anyone has additional information on the case or information on any other incidents involving the suspect that they call Carrboro police at (919) 918-7397 or Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515.
