SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (WNCN) - One person died in a two-vehicle crash that tore a door off a car in Moore County just outside Southern Pines early Saturday, officials said.
The incident happened just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of North May Street and the U.S. 1 bypass, north of Southern Pines, according to a fire official in Moore County.
The wreck involved a Ford pickup truck and Hyundai sedan. A passenger in the Hyundai was ejected during the crash and died.
It happened when the Ford was headed toward Sanford and came out from North May Street, authorities said.
The driver of the Ford lost control, and hit the Hyundai in the passenger side, tearing a rear door completely off the car, according to officials.
The Ford then continued across all lanes of U.S. 1, finally stopping on the side of the highway.
The Hyundai ended up in the southbound lane of the highway.
U.S. 1 reopened around 4 a.m. The identity of the person who died was not available.
