KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (WNCN) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed one person is dead and another is charged collision Wednesday morning just outside Knightdale.
According to authorities, a call regarding the crash came in at 7:37 a.m. as a vehicle that had flipped on S. Smithfield Road at King Farm Lane.
According to highway patrol, the crash occurred when a Mercedes being driven by Vasyl Sharkadi, 33, of Plains, Pennsylvania, pulled out from a driveway in the path of a Mazda SUV traveling south on Smithfield Road toward Poole Road.
Sharkadi was attempting to make a left onto Smithfield Road in front of the Mazda, which was being driven by Candace Marie Valentine, 31, of Knightdale. The Mercedes struck the Mazda in the road and Valentine’s vehicle continued off the roadway to the right, causing her to overcorrect and flip the SUV, highway patrol officials said.
Valentine was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, officials said. She did not survive her injuries.
Sharkadi is charged with failure to yield right of way and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
