15-year-old charged with having gun at Wake Forest High School, officials say

Wake County News

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WNCN) – A 15-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday for having a gun at Wake Forest High School, according to town spokesman Bill Crabtree.

The unidentified teenager is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information was released.

Seth Cole, whose younger brother is a sophomore at WFHS, was shocked to learn of the news.

“I was just thinking about why it was there. What was going on,” he said. “You always think about the motive and what’s actually there, but, it’s never good to actually have it regardless.”

Cole said he’s thanking the school officials for how they handled the situation and provided details.

“As much information as we know is always important when that’s your family members and your siblings in something like that,” he said.

The following letter was sent to parents:

Wake Forest High School Parents:

To keep you informed, I wanted to let you know about an incident that occurred at school today.

We received a tip from a student that another student was in possession of a gun on campus.

Administrators and law enforcement responded immediately and found the weapon among the student’s belongings.

While no one was threatened in any way, bringing a weapon to school is dangerous and unacceptable.

We are not allowed to discuss disciplinary action for an individual student, but we can note that state law requires a 365-day suspension for any student in possession of a firearm.

The best means to keep schools safe is to maintain healthy and open relationships between adults and students at all times. Please help us to continue to emphasize to students that they should feel comfortable in talking about situations that cause them concern.

We are very grateful to our local law enforcement officials, our WCPSS Security Team and our staff for their swift action in this matter. They work closely with us to ensure the safety of our students every day.

Know that we will continue to take every measure to ensure the safety of our students.
