GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — Authorities are investigating a double shooting at a Garner Walgreens that occurred Thursday morning and left two people with serious injuries, according to officials.
Police, fire and EMS units were dispatched just before 10 a.m. to the Walgreens located at 1116 U.S. Highway 70 west.
A Walgreens employee told a CBS 17 reporter that there was a robbery of the pharmacy and that the suspect wanted drugs. The suspect then shot a pharmacist and a pharmacy tech. Police on Friday said that it didn’t appear that robbery was a motivation in the shooting and that the shooting stemmed from an argument the suspect had with the pharmacist.
The suspect has been identified as Stephen Denning, CBS 17 confirms. Denning lives on Henry Drive – which is a block from the Walgreens.
The two victims were identified as 31-year-old Sarah Wright, of Clayton, and 33-year-old Brandon Gordon, of Garner.
Authorities said at a press conference that the victims were found in the store’s pharmacy. They were transported to WakeMed with gunshot wounds, Garner police said.
Following the shooting, police issued a “Be On the Look Out” — BOLO — for the suspect’s vehicle. A deputy spotted the vehicle and the suspect was chased into the Golden Corral in Raleigh on Tryon Road.
The deputy shot Denning outside of the restaurant, officials said.
Denning was taken into custody, according to police. Officials said Denning was injured and is currently at WakeMed.
Denning has been charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Garner police said more charges are expected.
A family member of one of the workers inside the Walgreens at the time of the shooting told CBS 17 that one worker was shot in the chest and another was shot in the eye.
They are both in serious condition. Coworkers said the woman is a pharmacist and the man is a pharmacy tech.
The store remained in lockdown more than two hours after the shooting occurred.
Eric Curry with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is involved in the investigation because an “officer was involved in the arrest.”
A statement from SomeCorral LLC, a Golden Corral Franchise said that someone may have been shot in their parking lot:
We are aware that a person may have been shot in our parking lot and police are on the scene. We have no further information and refer you to the authorities.”
Walgreens released the following statement to CBS 17:
Our first concern is the safety of our team members and customers who were in the store at the time as well as our team members who were injured. We are assessing the situation and are thankful to the first responders. We refer you to law enforcement for information about the incident and will provide additional information about our store as we learn more.
Police have not released information on the severity of the suspect’s injuries.
