RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The City of Raleigh says a grease blockage forced 216,000 gallons of sewage to spill into Crabtree Creek Thursday afternoon.

A concerned citizen reported seeing sewage flowing out of a manhole and into Crabtree Creek just after 3 p.m.

Crews were able to stop the leak in two hours.

A witness reported the overflow had been happening for three days prior to officials being notified.

“It is estimated that the clean-up for this area should be completed within the next 24 to 48 hours,” the City of Raleigh said. “No associated fish-kill were observed within this body of water.”

Only water, human waste, and toilet tissue are permitted to be discharged into the sewer system. If citizens experience excessive sewer smells or see sewer overflowing manholes or pipes, please call 919-996-3245 and report immediately.
