APEX, N.C. (WNCN) – A man says he was attacked by the suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting Thursday night.
John Hucks said he was listening to music by his neighborhood pool when a man approached his car and attacked him. He said that incident started a chain of events that ended in a fatal shooting.
“I had the doors open when, out of nowhere, a man had come up and grabbed me by the shirt and jumped into my car on top of me, pinned me down, and was screaming for me to turn my music off and to get out of here,” Hucks said.
Huck added that, after fighting back, the man ran into the woods and then into a home. That’s when he called 911 and his father.
“During the altercation, I had knocked off his hat in my car, which we had given to the police,” Hucks said. “They said they would try to call a canine unit to see if they could track the scent to where he had gone.”
Police and their K-9 searched for the suspect. They came to his home along the 3000 block of White Cloud Circle. They said the man opened the door, a large plump of smoke appeared, and that’s when the shooting happened.
Officials said the suspect was armed at the time of the shooting. Apex police said in a release Friday that they “encountered an armed individual at the entrance of his residence. The encounter resulted in law enforcement discharging their firearms and the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”
The release also does not what type of weapon the man was armed with.
A Wake County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson at the scene said Friday afternoon that they were not involved with the shooting.
Apex police said the circumstances leading up to the shooting appear to only involve the man who was killed. Police said they have not uncovered any evidence or information that shows any residents in Apex are in any danger.
The department “will continue to work with the SBI and Wake County District Attorney as we continue our investigation.”
Police have not identified the man who was killed or the officer(s) involved in the shooting.
