GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) - Authorities are investigating a construction accident that occurred around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
One worker is confirmed to have died, officials said.
The North Carolina Department of Labor said preliminary information indicates the worker was killed after the paver the worker was operating overturned into a ditch, crushing the worker.
Officials later said a worker operating a roller-paver was killed after the equipment "was struck and pushed into an excavation by a scraper/pan operated by another employee," according to a news release from the N.C. Department of Labor.
The incident occurred on Auburn-Knightdale Road and EMS and fire units were on scene quickly. First responders said the area is the site of a new development of a few hundred homes.
Officials initially said the accident involved an excavator on the construction site and that someone was trapped between two large pieces of equipment.
"There's a lot of Wake County Sheriff's [vehicles]," said witness Ricky Coats. "A lot of Garner Police Department [vehicles]. A lot of fire trucks, EMS. [There's] a lot of vehicles down there."
Garner Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Tim Herman added first responders from around central North Carolina, including a special group based in Raleigh, were called to help with the situation.
"We're using caution to protect everybody out here so we can approach and safely remove this large equipment," Herman said. "We've got specialized equipment in and out, heavy wreckers and cranes, to assist us with this operation."
