Carolina Hurricanes to host benefit game for wounded Raleigh officer

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The Carolina Hurricanes will host a benefit game to help wounded Raleigh Police Officer Charles Ainsworth on March 20. 

The game will feature the RPD Blueliners, a team of Raleigh police officers, against the NC Leatherheads, a team of local firefighters.

The Blueliners will be coached by Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin and Canes alum Erik Cole will be on the bench for the Leatherheads. 

This event is open to the public and no ticket is required.

Voluntary cash donations will be accepted at the door.

Mike Maniscalco will emcee the event which will include items being raffled off. 

Stormy and members of the Pepsi Storm Squad will be in attendance and concession stands will be open during the event.

The Hurricanes are donating the use of the arena and support personnel, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting Ainsworth and his family.

Ainsworth was shot multiple times as he responded to a suspicious car call around 8 p.m. on Jan. 9 near Schaub Drive and Teakwood Place in Southwest Raleigh, authorities said.

He has been recovering at WakeMed since the shooting.
