Downtown Raleigh streets reopen following gas leak

UPDATE: All downtown Raleigh streets have reopened as the gas leak has been capped.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A gas leak has forced Raleigh police to shut down a major thoroughfare through downtown Tuesday morning.

Raleigh police have closed McDowell Street just north of its intersection with Lane Street.

A parking garage near the leak has been closed off as well as crews work to cap a damaged 2-inch line, NCDOT said.

Traffic is being diverted onto Lane Street but traffic is backed up through downtown.

Please avoid the area if possible.

NCDOT said there is no timeline for when the leak will be fixed.

CBS 17 will update this story as it develops.
