RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Officials said a wheel came off a truck causing a fiery crash along Interstate 540 near the Capital Boulevard exit Friday afternoon.

The wreck happened around 4 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-540, according to the NC DOT.

After the wheel came off the truck, the vehicle veered off the road, rolled over a guardrail and caught fire.

The driver had a small bandage around his knee but he was walking around at the scene.

There were traffic back-ups in the area because of drivers slowing down to look at the unusual scene.
