GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) – Garner police said officers were involved in a pursuit that ended with a car crashed into an apartment building Friday afternoon.
Two suspects and a 2-year-old boy were in the vehicle, which crashed into a building at the Bryan Place Apartments at 905 Bryan Place, police said.
Garner police said Tyref Yamere Smith, 23, of Raleigh is charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, possession of marijuana, and the vehicle he was driving was seized.
The passenger, Louis C. Brock, 29, of Raleigh was charged with possession of marijuana, Garner police said.
Smith, who was driving the BMW sedan involved in the chase, tried to run with the toddler after the crash, but was quickly stopped, police said.
Police said the toddler was unrestrained in the car and they did not know the child was in the car during the chase, which happened around 4 p.m.
The child, as well as the two suspects, were being evaluated. There was no word on the severity of their injuries, police said.
The crash caused heavy structural damage to the apartment building, police said.
Lincoln Johnson and his wife live in the unit that the car slammed into. Johnson said they came home to discover the crash. The apartment above them was also damaged.
“It could have been worse if we’d have been home. Maybe one of us would have gotten hurt or something. So we’re grateful that we weren’t,” said Johnson.
Johnson and his wife just moved in last week and said the Red Cross is helping them find a place to stay Friday night. Their upstairs neighbor cannot stay in their apartment either.
“Just finished moving everything in. Just straightened up, did all the work, got everything straight and then this happened,” Johnson said.
