ZEBULON, N.C. (WNCN) — Authorities in Zebulon are looking for a man who was involved in a deadly three-car crash on Sunday night.
The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. in the 1400 Block of Hwy 97, which is West Gannon Avenue, Zebulon police said in a news release.
The crash happened as a 2007 GMC Yukon was heading east on Hwy 97 when it tried to pass a
Chevrolet passenger car, police said.
The Yukon hit the side of the Chevrolet it was trying to pass and then crashed head-on with a Honda Civic, police said.
“The driver of the Yukon fled the scene on foot,” the news release said.
The driver of the Honda, Jose Luis Piedra-Valdez, was taken to WakeMed.
Piedra-Valdez, 38, of Raleigh, died Monday at the hospital, according to police. He had children ages 4, 9, and 12, the family said.
“He was a great father (and) obviously a great man,” said his wife, Guadalupe Aguirre.
His uncle, Raphael Valdez, drove to Knightdale as soon as he heard about the accident.
“He should have stayed and tried to help my nephew,” Valdez said.
A passenger in the Yukon is still be hospitalized. Two people in the Chevrolet were treated for minor injuries and were released.
Corey Morgan, 39, of Middlesex is wanted on two counts of felony hit and run, two counts of misdemeanor hit and run, improper passing, and driving while license revoked.
