An inmate at Raleigh’s Central Prison was found dead in his cell Thursday morning, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
John Dalton, 47, was found unresponsive in his cell around 4 a.m. during the prison’s morning inmate count, according to an NCDPS press release. Medical staff attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead just before 5 a.m.
Officials said his death appears to be a suicide.
Dalton was convicted as a habitual felon in Onslow County on June 30, 2017, according to the release. He was serving a 6-year, 10-month sentence.
