Fire investigators in Cary are looking into what cause a detached garage to catch fire Thursday night, sending plume of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

The garage next to a home on the 5000 block of Lilly Atkins Road went up in flames around 7:45 p.m.

Neighbors said they heard a loud boom before the blaze started.

Sean Jones lives down the street. He said the home belongs to his boss, who called him to say the garage caught fire. Jones said the garage and all the tools and paint inside were a total loss.

“When she talked to me, it seemed like it was a small fire, but when I got here everything was gone. So, it obviously went up quick and fast,” said Jones.

The burning fire sent large smoke plumes down 64 eastbound.

“I looked up in the sky and I saw black smoke,” said Jones’ daughter Naomi.  “I’m like, ‘Oh gosh, her garage is on fire, I feel to bad for her.'”

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
