CARY, N.C. (WNCN) — A fatal motorcycle crash has shut down multiple lanes of U.S. Route 1 southbound near Tryon Road Tuesday morning, according to Cary police.

There was a major traffic backup on the road near mile marker 98 where three of four lanes were closed following the crash.

Cary police said they’re unsure at this time what happened, but they can confirm that a motorcyclist died in a crash on the road.

Police told CBS 17 that the three lanes would be closed “for a while,” but the scene was cleared and the lanes were reopened around 12:15 p.m.

The identity of the motorcyclist has not been released. It’s not known at this time if any other vehicles were involved or if anyone will be facing charges.
