The 20-year-old man charged with hacking a girl with a machete in Apex is scheduled to appear in court Friday — a year and a half after the attack.
The district attorney said the case is set for a hearing at 9:30 a.m. Friday. It’s not known whether it will be to set a trial, or if there will be a resolution.
The father of victim Priyanka Kumari said he’s been told the man will plead guilty to both charges.
Neel Salil Mehta, of Cary, told police he planned the Jan. 12, 2017 attack before using the ride sharing service Lyft to arrive at Abruzzo Lane on Jan. 12.
Police said he repeatedly struck Kumari with a machete in front of a residence on Venezia Way.
Kumari’s father said she suffered 46 injuries to her face and head alone. She suffered more injuries to her hands and may never have full use of them again.
Mehta told police he and Kumari were in a 18-month relationship but that had ended six months before the attack.
Mehta is charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Apex police released a series of 911 calls that revealed the brutality of the attack.
“There’s a guy assaulting a girl. He’s got a knife!” one caller said. “He’s stabbing her. She’s bleeding profusely.”
That same caller said the attacker was stepping on the victim’s throat during the attack.
“He’s slicing her head. He’s beating her up,” the caller said.
He is being held in jail under a $2 million bond.
