Wake County News

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A driver died Thursday after crashing and driving into a lake Thursday morning, authorities said.

A 2016 Cadillac owned by Robert Lee Sparks went into the water after Sparks “suffered a medical emergency causing him to leave the roadway and strike a curb,” according to the crash report. The car flipped onto its roof and was submerged into the water.

Raleigh police said the wreck resulted in a fatality when releasing the report.

The incident happened just before 10 a.m. in the area of New Hope Church Road and Deana Lane in Raleigh, police said.

A witness told CBS 17 a man was driving the car erratically before leaving the roadway and crashing into the lake.

“As I’m watching this car he jumps the curb and then the car goes into the lake and I said, ‘Oh my God,'” said Bernice Kendall.

Kendall said the man was driving at a high rate of speed behind her before the crash occurred.

Authorities told a CBS 17 crew on scene that the man was not dead when he was pulled from his car.
