Raleigh man accused of assaulting his infant, causing brain bleed

Wake County News

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Raleigh man claims his infant daughter suffered a brain bleed when the girl fell off of a bed.

Raleigh Police investigators charged Aaron Antonio Walton, 28, with one count of intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. A warrant for Walton’s arrest said he caused “subdural brain bleeding.”

Court documents said Walton “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did intentionally commit an assault that resulted in serious bodily injury” to the 7-month-old victim.

Walton faced a judge Wednesday afternoon. His first court appearance took place through a video call from the Wake County Detention Center, where Walton has been housed since his arrest on Tuesday.

Prosecutors asked Wake County District Judge Debra Sasser to keep Walton’s secured bond at $400,000, which she did.

Walton asked for his release so that he can go to a doctor’s appointment on Thursday.

“I have a chemotherapy appointment tomorrow that I’m supposed to be going to every other week here, for my cancer,” Walton said.

“I understand that, sir. However, this is a very serious felony,” Sasser said. “If you will make the jail aware of that, I can certainly add that on to some of the conditions, if they can somehow get you to chemotherapy. I don’t know how that works but I will certainly make sure that the jail is aware of that.”

As Sasser reiterated the severity of the charges, Walton interjected in his defense.

“She just fell off the bed. It’s not like I…,” he said.

The judge quickly cut him off.

“Sir, we’re not going to talk about the facts today because your attorney’s not here. The state is here and anything you say can be used against you,” Sasser said.

The judge ordered Walton to have no contact with his daughter or any other juvenile, and he is prohibited from returning to the home if he posts bond.

His next court date is May 1.
