Woman identified in deadly Wendell fire; explosion happened during incident

Wake County News

WENDELL, N.C. (WNCN) – Officials have identified a woman who died in a mobile home fire Monday in Wendell.

The large fire broke out after an explosion at a home along the 3500 block of Broughton Road, according to Eric Curry with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Delorise Winston, 79, died in the incident, Curry said.

The explosion, likely involving oxygen tanks Winston and her husband, Leonard Winson, 80, both were using, according to officials.

Leonard Winston was outside moving a car and as he was about to re-enter the home the explosion happened, Curry said.

Curry said there was likely already a small fire in the home at the stove and that an oxygen tank was “an accelerant.”

The mobile home was a total loss, officials said. Fire officials said that the wind made the fire tough to combat.
