GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A convicted killer died Monday during a shootout with victims of a home invasion in Goldsboro.

Goldsboro police identified 40-year-old Ryan Jermaine Allen as one of three men who “forced their way into (a) home” on West New Hope Road around 8:30 p.m., according to a news release.

Officers said a 7-year-old boy, his father, and another man were in the home at the time of the break-in.

Investigators said one of the intruders shot the boy’s father during an attempted burglary and assault.

One of the two men in the home returned gunfire, with at least one bullet striking Allen.

The three burglars ran away, but Allen did not get far. Officers who responded to a 911 call about shots fired in the mobile home park found Allen wounded in woods nearby.

Police said paramedics took Allen to Vidant Hospital in Greenville where he died during surgery.

City of Goldsboro public information officer LaToya Henry confirmed police arrested Allen in 2007 for the murder of Ricky Lee Burch. State records indicate Allen’s charges in that case were downgraded to manslaughter, and he got out of prison in January 2013.

Allen returned to a state penitentiary following a 2017 conviction for his involvement in a 2014 armed robbery. Investigators said at the time that Allen was the getaway driver for Demar Ryan Worrell, who shot Demetrius Montray Kornegay outside Kornegay’s home on Harding Drive.

Kornegay suffered serious injuries, and Worrell sustained a gunshot wound as he ran away.

Worrell served four years and three months in prison before his release in June 2018.

Henry said an investigation into the Monday night incident is ongoing.
