GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A Wayne County man has been charged in a February home invasion in which one his fellow robbers — a convicted killer — was fatally shot by a victim who lived at the home, police say.
In the incident the evening of Feb. 12, Goldsboro police said 40-year-old Ryan Jermaine Allen was one of three men who “forced their way into (a) home” on West New Hope Road, according to a news release.
Officers said a 7-year-old boy, his father, and another man were in the home at the time of the break-in.
Investigators said one of the intruders shot the boy’s father during an attempted burglary and assault.
One of the two men in the home returned gunfire, with at least one bullet striking Allen, who later died.
Allen was arrested in 2007 for the murder of Ricky Lee Burch. State records indicate Allen’s charges in that case were downgraded to manslaughter, and he got out of prison in January 2013.
Now, Goldsboro police say they have identified one of the two others with Allen during the home invasion.
Vance Decarlo Roddick, 27, is charged with first-degree burglary, attempted armed robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, police said Saturday.
Roddick was arrested Friday. He is being held in the Wayne County Detention Center on a $860,000 secured bond.
Roddick’s first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
