GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — A popular barbecue restaurant in Goldsboro has been shut down by the North Carolina Department of Revenue, the department confirmed Friday.
Wilber’s Barbecue, located at 4172 U.S. Highway 70 East, was shut down due to nonpayment of taxes, according to a sign on the door, as well as a statement from NCDOR.
The sign reads “Pursuant to NC G.S. 105-242(a)(2) the personal property here within has been seized for nonpayment of taxes.”
An NCDOR official told CBS 17 that due to the state’s taxpayer secrecy law, they could not say how much the restaurant owed in taxes or how long it’s been since they last paid their taxes. They also would not confirm that the restaurant would be able to reopen if they paid the state what they owed.
“Under state law, the Department of Revenue has the power to seize a business for nonpayment of taxes as a last resort after all other voluntary and forced tax collection measures have failed,” an official told CBS 17.
