RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – If you or someone you know has ever battled cancer then you understand it’s not just the individual but the entire family that’s in crisis mode.

That’s why North Carolinians and local celebrities Torry and Terrence Holt are committed to helping kids deal with this tough situation. It’s something they’ve been through themselves.

For Ryan Switzer and his family, which includes his little girls Payton and Emerson, help dealing with cancer came in the form of a summer camp where all the kids have one thing in common – a parent fighting cancer.

“I had cancer a few years ago and was going to Duke for treatment and realized the family life wasn’t dealing as well with cancer in our life as I thought. I thought, you get cancer, life moves on,” Switzer said.

The camp certainly helped, Payton Switzer said.

“It made it more fun… when you had friends – someone who understood too, it was a stronger friendship,” she said.

How difficult it was when their mother suffered from cancer and passed away.

“Having gone through it, we vowed to do something that could help families deal with it and deal with cancer, particularly helping those kids that often get overlooked…because at need be the attention goes to the parent,” Terrence Holt said.

Last year, the Holt Brothers Foundation helped send 85 kids to Camp Kesem.

Being kids at heart themselves, it’s not just about donating the money. They play, too.

“Their camp names are Thunder and Lightning and they have a blast. They’re not too good for anybody, they’re down to earth,” Ryan Switzer said of the brothers. “To see them interact with the kids that are there and their faces light up and the kids’ faces light up. It’s real, it’s genuine.”

Doing good in their own community is what makes Terrence and Torry Holt “uniquely North Carolina.”

“North Carolina is home. We’re home boys. This is our home state. People here have grown up with us since we’ve been young pups all the way now to adult men. You don’t have to leave home to do well,” the Holt brothers said.

In addition to Camp Kesem, the Holt brothers are preparing for their popular summer football camps happening later in June.
