Man dies in NC drug deal after grabbing on to fleeing car, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Police say a North Carolina man is dead after he got into a fight with men in a car and was holding on when their fleeing vehicle slammed into a parked SUV.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say it happened early Saturday during a planned drug deal in northwest Charlotte. Desmond Stevens, 21, died during the incident, officials said.

Police say Stevens started to fight with the driver of a Honda Accord.

Police say 21-year-old Scott McMannes then drove off with Stevens holding onto the car until they crashed into a parked Kia Sorento. Stevens was found lying dead in the road.

Police say McMannes and his younger brother ran from the scene, then called 911 to report their car had been stolen during an armed robbery.

Police charged McMannes and 17-year-old Zachary McMannes with felony hit and run.
