RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Raleigh man was transported to the UNC Burn Center after a fire broke out early Monday out on Merriweather Circle, officials said.

Fire officials said the fire started in the back bedroom of an apartment on Merriweather Circle around 2:40 a.m.

A resident of the affected unit was transported to UNC Burn Center after suffering injuries to his back, officials said.

A neighboring unit was evacuated but the flames did not spread to that apartment.

Fire officials said the fire was under control within 20 minutes.

“When we first arrived we had fire coming out the second floor, the rear window where the bedroom was and entering into the attic space,” Chief David Whitley said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
