RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Staff at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel in Henrico County say they were appalled to find a baby boy completely soiled who was left alone by his mother while she went out drinking.

“When I first saw that, it was heartbreaking,” said the hotel staffer that found the young boy.

She said when she found 31-year-old Taliaferro Troupe’s 16-month-old son and a dog inside the hotel room, the boy was badly soiled and crying.

Troupe had been arrested for a DUI shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday morning, leaving her child to fend for himself.

“How can a mother leave their child with no food?” the hotel staffer questioned. “He had no access to get anything to drink, of course. I mean, he can’t even get his own stuff. He had nothing. The dog had actually gotten to the refrigerator and opened it, so everything that was in the fridge was out.”

In fact, it wasn’t until about 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon that the child’s grandmother showed up to the hotel to alert the staff that the boy was there alone after she received a call from her daughter behind bars.

“We got the child out of the room, then eventually Henrico came and the grandmother took the child with her,” the staffer explained.

It’s still not clear exactly how long the little boy and the dog were left alone in that hotel room.

Troupe has been charged with DUI and felony child neglect.
