CHICAGO (WNCN) – R. Kelly has been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse by Cook County state’s attorney, CBS Chicago reports.
Nine of the counts specify the victim was between 13 and 15, the station says.
The charges against the singer are felonies, according to the Cook County state attorney.
Friday’s charges come after years of allegations directed at Kelly, accusing the now 52-year-old of sexual misconduct involving women and underage girls.
Through his lawyers, he has consistently denied them.
Attorney Michael Avenatti, who is representing a woman in the case, tweeted “it’s over” shortly after the charges were announced.
“After 25 years of serial sexual abuse and assault of underage girls, the day of reckoning for R Kelly has arrived,” the attorney wrote.
The Lifetime documentary, “Surviving R. Kelly,” recently started a protest to mute the singer.
The documentary featured interviews with R. Kelly’s alleged accusers.
