Sheriff and top deputy shot by suspect in Kansas, officials say

RICE COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The KBI says the Rice County Sheriff and Undersheriff have been shot in an incident in Rice County.

The man suspected in the shooting is David L. Madden, 37. Law enforcement officers surrounded a rural residence in Rice County where they believe the suspect is. KSN crews on the scene have seen multiple crews responding near the home. 

The KBI says the Rice County undersheriff was shot in the neck and taken to a Wichita hospital. The sheriff was also shot but in the leg. 

Bryant Evans is identified as the Rice County sheriff on the agency’s website while Chad M. Murphy is listed as the undersheriff.

Madden is listed as an absconder from the Kansas Corrections System. He was last listed as absconding on February 11, 2019.  

Witnesses in Sterling said there are multiple law enforcement vehicles and officers around the Sonic Drive-In restaurant and heard reports of a shooting.
